Why I Made Rising Phoenix | The Story Behind The Paralympics Documentary
Elite athletes and insiders reflect on the Paralympic Games and examine how they impact a global understanding of disability, diversity and excellence.

  • Such an amazing, moving, inspiring documentary. My young daughter turned to me and asked if we could go to the next Paralympics. I promised her we would make one, one day. My family joked that my top was wet from tears -- they were tears of hope, inspiration and appreciation of humanity. Thank you for making this!!

  • If only being disabled wasn’t so EXPENSIVE, that you have to be extremely fortunate to even hope to participate in sports, let alone elite or professional sports. Hell... so many of us need to be very fortunate to just have a chance at a middle class standard of living. People don’t realize how much not just high performance prosthetics are, or wheelchairs, or adapted bikes, etc. are, but just the normal medical appointments and care, as well as specialized rehab and training. I think it’s a lot different for those born with limb differences, as opposed to those who got them by amputation, as well. Good for them, still, and the story should be told. But I wish a great filmmaker could somehow convey the middling, yet life-altering, experience of becoming disabled (and especially physically disabled by INVISIBLE disabilities like Dusautonomia, EDS, Chronic Fatigue, etc). The poor, and dangerous,, patient-blaming attitude of many doctors when they can’t “easily” figure it out, and dismissive attitudes of doctors who have only seen 1 version of a disorder that lies on a large spectrum so they tell you that you are lying, depressed,it’s in your head or you just want attention. Most stories of disability are presented as “triump” or “tragedy”, or sometimes bother, but never in between. Because no wants to just hear about a life of struggle, of fighting insurance for treatment, fundraising to be able to travel a thousand miles across the country to one of only 2 doctors who can even hope to help you, or watch us drown in medical bills, have to go to court for benefits when we can barely get out of bed. No one we are so mid-represented and underrepresented in normal media- no one knows what most disabled people’s lives ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE.
