What The F**k Is...Ratched | Netflix
In 1947, Mildred Ratched begins working as a nurse at a leading psychiatric hospital. But beneath her stylish exterior lurks a growing darkness.

  • Physiological drama or horror is so flipping scary. Or the horror movies that have plot twists

  • Am I the only one who noticed this series reeks of misandry? All men are portrayed as either villains or useful idiots, that literally have to be destroyed by the 'powerful' female characters. Seems Netflix yet again wants to push a certain woke ideology down our throats.

  • the first episodes are great, the rest get lost in the plot and subplots and Mildred Ratched just turns into a more relatable women which you can feel empathy to, which takes the crazyness and unpredictableness away and makes it boring. The great photography, dressing, acting... it's just decoration in the end.

    • The pacing is disjointed so that’s the show’s weakest link. The performances are excellent. I don’t think it has much to do with making a hero out of a serial killer - she’s no hero and that’s very clearly laid out. Plus there are so many shows focusing on serial killers: Dexter, Bates Motel, You, Killing Eve, Hannibal, Barry, etc., all in different stages of the killer’s story. In all of these stories, Ratched included, there is an awareness by the writers that for all of the “reasons” these protagonists have that led to killing, that they are still in the wrong. I think the reasons people are being especially critical of this show is because the killer 1.) is one of the most hated villains in cinema so there is pushback on any sort of sympathy for her 2.) Isn’t a man OR a hot 20 something woman 3.) is gay. If you check rotten tomatoes reviews by regular viewers, their biggest issue with the show aside from the pacing is that “Ratched isn’t gay,” even though her sexuality was of zero importance in the original film.

Ratched is actually SCARY!!!! Loved every minute of it! Also, Ryan Murphy is the only Caucasian director/writer/producer that continually creates amazing Asian characters that aren’t offensive with none of the usual Hollywood stereotypes. Jon Jon Briones is amazing! These are proud, smart, tragic, and very human characters! Ratched is awesome! And gorgeous!

They were simply trying to cash in on a famous character when this was just another episode of American Horror Story about a psychotic nurse. And once again what the fuck is up with these creators thinking we need the gross over-the-top beat you over the head sex scenes? I ain't no prude but it did nothing to further the story whatsoever just more reasons to put in scenes of women Mackin on each other's couch. This series is an insult to Louise Fletcher

Although I personally prefer redemption stories or at least the possibility of one. This character by definition cannot have a redemption story. Or a happy ending.

    • That's an amazing simile. I agree that much of the horror of the character and the story was in the bleak and colorless setting. It didn't need the visual bells and whistles that this version seems to lean into quite heavily. The brightness of this show isn't inherently bad, but it goes against the original design, which can be off-putting for someone who likes the original and the previous interpretations. I'm not generally opposed to reimaginings and even complete rewritings of the source material, because it can be a new story that stands on its own and is good in its own ways. Maybe making this story all bright and shiny could work, even if to me it looks a bit circusy. Other people might enjoy it just as much as I don't. To each their own and all that. I think what made me the most apprehensive after watching the trailer was the fact that they appear to try and make her compelling and likable. If we're operating under the assumption that this is, in essence, the same character that we see in the novel, then her backstory has to be a story of someone who is either already a monster or gradually becomes one. But by trying to make her endearing, they're risking character inconsistency. She has to be cruel and manipulative to be recognizable at nurse Ratched, yet at the same time likable because she's now the lead? That could get tricky. It might work, I don't know, I haven't seen it yet. It's not impossible, but it's also not easy. I'm always up for character development and layers. But it can be so easy to accidentally add layers that just don't belong. All in all, I feel like the show might be more enjoyable to people who'd never read or seen previous versions of the character. It might be easier to accept this version without any expectations.

    • i found the only intelligent comment on here, thank you. yeah, why not make an origin story type series on jeffrery dahmer, or ,if fictional, the tragic ,bizarre life of (pick preferred evil fictional character)? ratched - as in, the character from ken kesey's novel -and one portrayed by louise fletcher, from the amazing 1975 film, making it work with only a starched cap, soulless eyes, saccharine and passive aggressive. not theatrically psychopathic, kitsch, camp , dressed in a sodding teal air hostess uniform, skipping about. maybe I'm wrong and it'll be fab.but it just looks like it has a desperate housewives vibe, with a dark twist. what made it was the grim hopelessness and institutionalisation, the bare walls, the wipe clean paint. the banality of nurse ratched as she would tear into her patients with the hint of pleasure. this is like throwing glitter on the sistine chapel.
